Possessive Nominal Expressions in GB: DP vs. NP
نویسنده
چکیده
1.1 Background Since Steven Abney's 1987 MIT dissertation, The English Noun Phrase in Its Sentential Aspect, the socalled DP Hypothesis has gained acceptance in the eld of Government and Binding (GB) syntax. This hypothesis proposes that a nominal expression is headed by a determiner that takes a noun phrase as its complement. The preexisting NP Hypothesis, on the other hand, diagrams nominal expressions as headed by nouns, sometimes taking a determiner phrase as a speci er. This basic di erence is illustrated in the following trees for the nominal expression the dog :

1 Projections above NP in Mandarin
The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, I show that although Mandarin is an articleless language, its nominal expressions involve structures larger than a Noun Phrase (NP). I argue that two distinct projections, Demonstrative Phrase (DemP) and Unit Phrase (UnitP), should be identified in the structure above NP. Second, based on the proposal, I show that various ambiguous expressions, in f...
متن کاملAgreement in Maasai and the Syntax of Possessive DPs (I)
Possessive DPs are “complex” in the sense that they involve two distinct nominal expressions as components.1 In this paper I address the issue of characterizing the nature of the syntactic relation holding between these two nominal expressions in possessives whose possessum is arguably not a syntactic argument-taking category. This amounts to providing an account of what licenses the insertion ...

متن کاملTemporal Adjectives and the Structure of Possessive Dp
creates two interpretations. On one reading, the temporal adjective modifies the common noun (N-modifying reading). On the other, it modifies the possession relation (POSS-modifying reading). An explanation for this behavior is offered that appeals to what occurs in possessive sentences like John has a former car (N-modifying reading) and John formerly had a car (POSS-modifying reading). In the...
متن کاملAcquiring the Possessive Construction in Modern Greek
The acquisition of the Possessive Construction is one of the main topics of interest within the acquisition of the DP. There are three main reasons for this: a) the Possessive Construction emerges very early in child speech, b) in many languages it involves movement, and thus it can provide evidence for the availability of movement operations, and c) it requires morphological marking both in la...
